Local Cultural Heritage Body

GYGM

provides professional services for protection and management of sacred sites, tangible cultural heritage including archaeological sites and objects and Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property (ICIP) for the Borroloola region. GYGM works with the Traditional Owners to ensure the Right People are the decision makers for the Right Country while providing expertise in the conduct of cultural heritage surveys, recording of sites and artefacts and data sovereignty through he GYGM cultural database.

GYGM offers the opportunity for Traditional Owners to nominate GYGM as their Cultural Heritage Body and provides a local Indigenous corporation through which local employment of Traditional Owners is administered. Rather than working for external stakeholder, Traditional Owners can work through their own local corporation working with their own archaeologists and anthropologists.

As a local Cultural Heritage Body GYGM offers Traditional Owner management and control of Cultural Heritage based on the Right People speaking for the Right Country.

The areas where these services will be established and provided will be subject to the authority and consent of the relevant traditional Aboriginal owners, site custodians and cultural leaders of each area. By basing this service in Borroloola, GYGM has the potential to create many more local jobs as rangers, cultural heritage field staff, cultural monitors and many other jobs working on country, connecting work with culture.

The two initial focus areas for GYGM as a local Cultural Heritage Body will be to:

Pursue cultural reconnection

at MacArthur River station and Bing Bong station

Support the development of a Gudanji ranger group

to collaborate on rehabilitation at MRM.
